Strengthening impacts of spring sea surface temperature in the north tropical Atlantic on Indian Ocean dipole after the mid-1980s

چکیده

Abstract It is well known that the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) closely related to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In this study, it found spring–summer north tropical Atlantic (NTA) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies can contribute development of IOD since mid-1980s as ENSO. After mid-1980s, an anticyclonic circulation over subtropical northeastern Pacific could be excited by cool NTA SST in spring and summer due a Gill-type Rossby-wave response. A low-level cyclonic appears west turn. The anomalous lower-level southwesterlies on southeastern flank reduce climatological wind speed, thus, warm appear extend central via wind-evaporation-SST (WES) feedback. As result, Walker Indo-Pacific region changed, with descending eastern ascending Pacific. branch generates southeasterly along coast off Sumatra lifts thermocline Ocean, which produces positive event autumn. Such cross-basin mechanism supported coupled model experiment perturbations NTA. contrast, although cold induce equatorial through interhemispheric meridional before responses are rather weak. addition, enhancement NTA-IOD relationship after suggested result from changes mean state under context global warming, confirmed two experiments different backgrounds.

The impact of decadal-scale Indian Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies on Sahelian rainfall and the North Atlantic Oscillation

[1] The sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of the tropical Indian Ocean show a pronounced warming since the 1950s. We have analyzed the impact of this warming on Sahelian rainfall and on the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) by conducting ensemble experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model. Additionally, we investigate the impact of the other two tropical oceans on these two climate ...

Impact of atmospheric submonthly oscillations on sea surface temperature of the tropical Indian Ocean

[1] Impacts of atmospheric intraseasonal oscillations (ISOs) at submonthly periods (10–30 days) on Indian Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) are studied using satellite observed outgoing long wave radiation, QuikSCAT winds, SST and an ocean general circulation model for the period of 1999–2004. The results suggest that submonthly ISOs can cause significant 10–30 day SST changes throughout the ...

Relationship Among Sea Surface Temperature, ENSO and Indian Ocean Dipole in the Indian Ocean: A Clue to Recognizing Convective Systems

The Northern Indian Ocean is unique in the global ocean because of seasonal reversal of winds as well as surface ocean currents. In the southern part of the Indian Ocean, a significant ocean-atmospheric phenomenon developed just like an El Nino phenomenon noticed in the Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon is known as the Indian Ocean Dipole. In this study we investigate the relationship between IOD ...
